You Might Lose Your Job in 7 Years.
Time flies. You're 25 now, soon 32 and jobless when learning new things is hard.
Why?
ā Small teams do better than big ones. X fired thousands but performed well on all KPIs.
ā Everyday a small team takes market share from big companies.
ā Solo founders are winning clients from VC-funded startups too.
My startup: Unicorn Platform has just one full-time developer, yet I got 20,000 new users in January alone. Many switched from Webflow & Wix who have many employees.
By 2029, tech companies will have 90% less staff. It'll happen in other sectors too (transportation, translation, support, marketing).
What to do?
1) Start your own business
2) Work for equity
3) Invest
4) Share revenue
5) Build an audience
[Own Business]
Start side projects during weekends and evenings.
Focus on something related to your main job as you know the problems better there.
Launch a web directory around a familiar topic. If it gets popular, build tools for the same audience later with good distribution channels already set up.
Go for single purpose tools that don't need heavy investment.
[Work For Equity]
Many small startups would happily pay you in equity. Earn enough to live off dividends/exits within 5-7 years by working part-time at these startups instead of cash investing.
Since paying my team members with equity since 2010 they've paid mortgages or bought cars while earning passive income.
[Invest]
I haven't made money from investments; mostly lost money. But Warren Buffet says it's possible to make money here - not my area of expertise though.
[Share Revenue]
There'll be millions of solo founders by year-end making between $1k-$20k revenue who'd love help without risk through rev sharing.
[Build An Audience]
Audience is gold this decade.
Tools are becoming commodities and users don't care about the vendor. Building tools is getting super easy, but building a loyal audience isn't.
Having 100k social media followers can be a better asset than having 100k ARR on a SaaS tool.
The audience must be hard-earned so they know why they follow you. They should remember you as "the guy who posts stuff about...".
