Every marketer makes this BIG mistake.
(That costs them a LOT of money ๐ฐ)
And you probably make it too:
You think people care.
Care about your copy.
Care about your product.
Care about your features.
Care about your blog articles.
Care about your infographics.
Care about your landing page.
Care about your LinkedIn posts.
Care about your website design.
Care about your value proposition.
Spoiler: You care. They donโt.
These are all tools.
Tools to make them care about:
Whatโs in it for them.
โ What can they learn?
โ How can they save time?
โ How can they look good?
โ How can they make money?
โ How can their life be made easier?
Stop marketing for yourself.
Start marketing for them.

2023 was my best year so far.
But it wasnโt all sunshine & rainbows:
โ Personal
+ I worked on making myself happy.
+ I lived abroad for the first time in 15y.
+ I discovered a beautiful country & culture.
+ I took care of my health. And a better diet.
+ I cut down on drinking (less than once/week).
- I still drink more often than I probably should.
- I didnโt go to the gym as much as I planned.
- More time spent working than w/ friends.
- I struggled to maintain motivation.
- I still overthink way too much.
โ Professional
+ 4x monthly recurring revenue.
+ We closed our first big US deals.
+ First signs of success with our SEO.
+ New successful GTM initiative (Sales).
+ First successful year of making $ online.
- Startup Growth is hard. It made me doubt.
- To be an employee. Or work for myself?
- I lost 4 big deals (that we needed).
- I lacked organization. It hit hard.
- I had doubts about my value.
โ LinkedIn
+ 9 million total views.
+ More writing for โmyselfโ.
+ 3.4x follower growth (+30k).
+ I made some amazing new friends.
+ Confidence in my creator-audience fit.
- Motivation dips with algorithm changes.
- 7 high-effort posts didnโt perform.
- Slower growth induced doubt.
- Not enough โnewโ content.
- I ignored too many DMs.
We all love to share the good.
Or rather โ itโs hard to share the bad.
But without both sunshine and rain there would be no rainbows.
What's 1 good & 1 bad thing about your year?

The โMore Machineโ Trap (for marketers):
Marketing can feel like a โmore machineโ.
More marketing actions = more leads and pipeline.
But itโs not. There are three key limits that require you to act strategically and align around big themes, channels, and campaigns.
Limits:
-Your market can only absorb so many messages. Make them count.
-Your marketing team and budget can only produce so much. Make it compound for the biggest return.
-Your company can only work with clarity toward a single vision. The best marketing delivers focus.
How do your teams prioritize alignment with these limits in mind?

Ever heard of the PayPal Mafia?
These ex-PayPal employees co-founded:
- Yelp

- Palantir Technologies
...and many more!
"Once You're Lucky, Twice You're Good"
But more importantly:
This shows the power of a strong network.
Surround yourself with smart people.
Play long-term games with them.
You'll inevitably win.

๐ Importance of Marketing in the Early Startup Days! ๐
Hey there, fellow startup founders and CEOs! ๐ As we embark on our entrepreneurial journeys, it's crucial to recognize the paramount role that marketing plays in our early days. ๐ฏ
In the fast-paced startup ecosystem, effective marketing can be a game-changer for our growth and success. Here's why:
1๏ธโฃ Visibility:- Marketing helps us increase our brand's visibility and reach, allowing us to connect with potential customers and investors. With limited resources, every opportunity to be seen and heard is invaluable.
2๏ธโฃ Brand Building:- Marketing enables us to shape our brand's identity and establish a unique value proposition. By conveying a compelling story and showcasing our offerings, we create an emotional connection with our target audience.
3๏ธโฃ Customer Acquisition:- A well-executed marketing strategy helps us acquire those initial customers that are vital for gaining momentum. By understanding our target audience and tailoring our message to their needs, we can generate leads and drive conversions.
4๏ธโฃ Competitive Edge;- In a competitive market, standing out from the crowd is essential. By implementing innovative marketing tactics, we can differentiate ourselves and capture the attention of potential customers who might otherwise overlook us.
5๏ธโฃ Adaptability:- Marketing allows us to gather valuable feedback from our early customers, enabling us to iterate and refine our offerings. By listening to their needs and preferences, we can adapt our products or services to better meet market demands.
Remember, in the early days, when resources are limited, creative and strategic marketing efforts can give us the edge we need to thrive. So, let's leverage the power of marketing to create a strong foundation for our startups and pave the way for future great success! ๐ช

Whether you're the first or nth marketing hire, showing how marketing makes a real impact isn't easy.
Here's a simple framework to show the impact of ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด while reporting up to your founders or leadership -
Report outcomes (or impact) that the marketing activities drive and ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต the activities.
While it may seem evident, it is easy to get lost in the trap of reporting the activities you have going on.
๐งฎ Reporting framework -
1๏ธโฃ Result or outcome the marketing activity drove (e.g. website traffic)
2๏ธโฃ The โwhyโ behind this outcome (e.g. more ads or a webinar or a social media campaign)
3๏ธโฃ What next (Identify what led to the outcome, and how you can replicate it in the future)
